Reply To: Do you need to know Java to learn Hadoop?

You’ve posted this in the Hive/HCatalog forum. Although that tool is written in Java you don’t need to know any java to use it. The same is true for most of the rest of Hadoop.

You do need to know some Java if you want to diagnose stack traces (Java errors which appear in the logs) but that can be picked up without knowing the full language.

Of course if you want to be writing MapReduce v1 programs then Java helps, but even there you can use streaming to pass the data to other applications.

With Spark – you have a choice of Java, Scala, or python.
