I suspect that the Ambari view does not understand how to obtain or forward LDAP authorization. After reinstalling the cluster from scratch and leaving authorization at the default (Unix permissions, I believe) the Hive view works. The downside is that all users can access each others databases now. The global issue of authorization and authentication is the most poorly documented aspect of all Hadoop distributions I’ve tried. Information is scattered randomly across documentation for all the subsystems with no unified explanation or rationale. It seems that plain, old Unix authentication is a complete afterthought.
