Try the following to you jdbc url – “/;auth=noSasl” In some (preview) versions of sandbox, I believe noSasl mode was being used. I new version of HDP 2.2 sandbox, you should not need that noSasl option.

Thanks!!! That did it. Now I feel stupid – I should have thought of that. On some other flavors that will actually cause it to fail so we took that out of our code by default.
